A citation is a formal way to acknowledge a source that you used when creating a piece of content. Citations show readers where your information came from and allow them to find the original material.
Types of citations
Full citations
A list of full citations is provided at the end of a document. The name of the list depends on the citation style:
- APA style / Chicago author-date style: References page
- MLA style / Chicago author-date style: Works Cited page
- Chicago notes and bibliography style: Bibliography page
These pages include all the details needed to locate a source, such as author, title, and publisher.
In-text citations
In-text citations are shorter versions of full citations placed directly in the body of your writing. They appear in parentheses or as footnotes whenever you reference an idea or information from another source.
Formatting citations
The formatting of citations depends on both the citation style (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.) and the type of source (book, journal article, website, etc.). Each style has specific rules that determine how citations should look.
